  • Moving with a toddler

Posted on October 16, 2015 by Todd

Whats makes moving even worse than it already is? Moving with toddlers. Moving with toddlers is so much more than getting their stuff from point A to point B. You need to make sure your little one stays safe during the chaos.
There are no rules for child proofing your move but a little common sense can go a long way! Maybe one of these tips could save you a trip to urgent care.
First things first-keep track of dangerous items. Kitchen knives, scissors, poisonous chemicals, don't forget about medications cleaning supplies.
Cleaning supplies is one many forget about. Keep those far out of reach from your little ones. Those are often times poisonous and potentially toxic. You should be using chemical free cleaners anyway!!
Next-outlets, staircases, toilets and bookshelves. Consider keeping the baby gate around and blocking off areas that may be potentially harmful.
Regardless, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

  • Living life in Orange County!

Posted on August 19, 2015 by Todd

It’s no secret that we love living in Orange County. Considering Todd and I both grew up in the Inland Empire, OC’s sweeping views and cool temperatures make for a nice home. I could give you a thousand reasons why I love living in Orange County but I’ll just give you my top 5.

    1. The beaches. Nothing feels better then putting my toes in the sand with the ocean breeze blowing in my face. I mean, people travel here to go on vacation! It also makes it really convenient when Todd wants to go surfing. If you have never been, be sure to check out The Strand in Dana Point, Corona Del Mar and Balboa Island. When I pull my beach chair out on the sand and close my eyes, it feels like I’m on vacation!

    2. Orange County is dog friendly! There are so many restaurants, shopping areas and beaches that welcome your beloved pooch. We recently we to What A Dish in Dana Point and they brought Frankie his own bowl of fresh water and dog treats while we were eating. For us dog lovers, it doesn't get better than that! If your in OC and wanting a place to take your dog, check out the app called Bring Fido. It gives you all of the places where dogs are welcomed.

    3. Great shopping! Every store you could imagine is somewhere in Orange County. You have one of the biggest shopping meccas in Santa Ana called South Coast Plaza. There is Fashion Island in Newport Beach which is my personal favorite. Not only does every store allow your dog but you can see the ocean while your shopping! Also check out the Irvine Spectrum in Irvine. A fun, kid friendly place with a huge ferris wheel and great restaurants.

    4. It’s safe and well kept. Irvine has been voted one of the safest cities for years now. But it’s not only Irvine, many of the cites in Orange County are safe for your children and families and kept

clean. People take pride to live here so they keep it nice. I guess that’s why there is a premium to live in Orange County.

    5. Lastly, the weather. When it’s 70 degrees all the time, who can complain? It rains maybe 10 days a year and breaks 75 a few days during the summer. Other than that, it’s sunshine all day long!
Regardless if you’re a resident of OC or just visiting, there really is something special about Orange County.

    Unknown-1

  • Why is moving so difficult?

Posted on August 7, 2015 by Todd

    By Jamie Lohr

We all know moving is one of lifes most stressful events. But what really makes it so hard? It’s important to understand what makes moving so difficult so you can make your move as easy as possible.

    Time:
Moving takes a lot of time. From deciding what materials you will need, organizing, choosing a reliable mover. Not to mention to purchase of your new home. The list goes on. Can you imagine doing all of this while your working a full time job or watching your children? One way to really cut down time is hire a reliable mover. Go to Yelp, Angie’s list or ask a friend for a reliable mover. Make sure you get all the fees up front so there are on surprises when they are done unpacking your belongings. Typically, free quotes are provided!

Another way to save time is use Piggyboxes. Rather than going to Home Depot or Lowes for moving boxes or packing tape, we deliver our boxes directly to your door and then pick them up when you’re done. No need to find a friend or dumpster to relocate the boxes to. And no more packing tape!!
We also have wardrobe boxes that can make moving your clothes a breeze!

    Children and pets:
Moving can really cause stress upon your children and pets too. Adapting to a new home is no easy feat. Your children will need to find new friends and adapt to a new environment. If you know you are moving try to prepare your kids in advance and get them as excited for the move as you can. Making it something to look forward to not something that they are going to dread.

For pets, make sure the backyard is properly fenced in before you let them go. Bring along all of their favorite toys and beds to they have something that isn't new. Often times, pets go into hiding. It will just take a few days for them to adapt. Time heals all wounds!

    Be organized:
Make your move as organized as possible. If you know you have a lot of things you don’t need, donate them to a local non-profit organization. This will save you the time of having to move and unpack things you will never use. Make sure you label your moving boxes clearly so they can be unloaded in the correct room. Prepare in advance. Don’t wait last minute to hire a moving or start packing. Start doing this weeks in advance. Half of the stress people bring upon themselves is leaving things last minute.

Moving is never going to be easy but with these little tips hopefully you can reduce the stress of your move!

  • A blog about our dog

Posted on July 20, 2015 by Todd

    By: Jamie Lohr

If you are anything like us at PiggyBoxes, you prefer to have your four-legged companion by your side at all times. Well, our dog Frankie is no exception. He not only works with us, vacations with us, and sleeps with us. He has his own title at PiggyBoxes.

So who is our Chief Executive Pooch? His name is Frankie! A three year old ti-colored King Charles Cavalier who runs our home, loves his Cavalier pals and documents his adventures on Instagram. Thats right, he has his own Instagram account (@thefrankiemonster). Having a dog has changed my life for the better so, no wonder I HATE leaving him at home. Our families think we're crazy but do you leave your children at home? No. So he comes with us, everywhere we go!

Finding places to take him isn't always easy. I have scoured Southern California for the best places to bring your dog and here is what I have (all of them are Frankie approved!).

    2013-66-XL
    1. Wilma’s Patio on Balboa Island- This place is so dog friendly they bring your dogs their own bowl of fresh water. Chances are when you go, you’re not the only one with a dog. The front patio makes the perfect setting for a lunch date with you and your pooch! What's even better is you can take them on the ferry when you're done dining or anywhere on the Island because everyone there loves dogs!

    2. Corona Del Mar - We could spend hours walking around here enjoying the views and sunsets. Not to mention meeting lots of furry friends along the way! The best way to describe it is a gorgeous dog park with an ocean view, except it's not a dog park!

    3. Huntington Beach Dog Beach - The best place to let your dog run free to enjoy everything the beach has to offer! Waves, sand and lots of birds!

    4. Any where in Palm Desert. One of our favorite vacation spots is Palm Desert because literally every place allows dogs! The entire city is dog friendly. Outside of every shop on El Paseo are dogs bowls with water and treats. It doesn't get any better than that!

    5. Fashion Island in Newport Beach - This gorgeous shopping mecca is also a paw-some hang out for your dogs! All of the stores allow your pet. There are several eateries that have out door seating to bring your dog. It’s basically a woman’s dream - shopping and dogs!

In reality, all dogs are happy to go anywhere with their owner. I know that I am happier with him by my side :) IMG_2707

  • Changing the way you clean your house!

Posted on June 22, 2015 by Todd

    By: Jamie Lohr

There was a time when people didn't think twice about what types of cleaners they sprayed around their homes. Full of toxins and chemicals, as long as it cleaned people didn't care. Times are changing and people are second guessing the harsh, hazardous chemicals they are spraying on their kitchen counter tops, floors, and putting in their dishwashers and washing machines.

Due to alarming research and case studies, many people are seeking alternative, all-natural cleaning methods that are not only better for the environment but clean just as well if not better! With ingredients you can pronounce, like vinegar, baking soda and coconut oil. Many of these products are not only better for your health and safe to use around kids and pets, but they’re also environmentally friendly.

If you are a DIY-er try making your own cleaning solution! Here are five basic ingredients that serve as the building blocks for many safe home cleaning needs:

1 Baking Soda - Cleans and deodorizes. Softens water to increase sudsing and cleaning power of soap. Good scouring powder.

2 Borax - Cleans and deodorizes. Excellent disinfectant. Softens water. Available in laundry section of grocery store.

3 Soap - Biodegrades safely and completely and is non-toxic. Available in grocery stores and health food stores. Sold as liquid, flakes, powder or in bars. Bars can be grated to dissolve more easily in hot water. Insist on soap without synthetic scents, colors or other additives.

4 Washing Soda - Cuts grease and removes stains. Disinfects. Softens water. Available in laundry section of grocery store or in pure form from chemical supply houses as "sodium carbonate."

5 White Vinegar or Lemon Juice - Cuts grease and freshens.

Don’t have time to DIY? Try one of our favorite house hold cleaners from J. R. Watkins in Lavender. It’s all-natural and smells amazing! Find it at your local Sprouts.

It’s time to rethink what your spraying around your house, your children and your pets!

  • So what makes PiggyBoxes so much better than cardboard?

Before the move:  To find cardboard are you really going to go dumpster diving? Ew! Chances are you will have to drive to your local home improvement store and stock up on boxes and packing tape. Not to mention you have to build them!

With PiggyBoxes, we deliver our crates directly to your door, NO ASSEMBLY REQUIRED! Just go on our website or give us a call, pick a package that works for you and your boxes are on their way!

During the move: If you think about it, cardboard is really just a heavy form of paper. While cardboard can be great to light weight items, there is one huge downside. Durability. Once you throw a few books or pair of shoes in a cardboard box, chances are it’s going to break. There goes all that time you put into building and packing that box. Plus, the cost of the box and packing tape.

With PiggyBoxes, our totes are made of extremely durable plastic that can hold up to 100lbs! Just stack the PiggyBoxes 4 crates high on one of our awesome dollies and off you go!

After the move: Once your done un-wrangling yourself from the packing tape and emptying out your cardboard boxes, you'll need find a new home for them, the trash. Lugging these boxes to the local dump is time consuming especially after you've just moved.
With PiggyBoxes, we conveniently pick them up from your new house! Just pick a date and time that works for your schedule and just like that, the boxes are gone!

Because PiggyBoxes are so durable and convenient, we promise to save you time and money on your next move!

  • Starting Fresh - Moving Ideas

Posted on March 27, 2014 by Todd

    Starting fresh – Moving ideas

Moving is never easy, especially because it involves change at so many different levels. Usually when you know that you need to move, you start making a plan of the things that you want to keep, and the ones you want to leave behind. After all, it allows you to start fresh in a new place, where you can change the page and live a different life. Therefore, you will need to make a list with all your stuff, and then organizing the ones that you have to take with you.
In order to be able to move without difficulties, you should follow certain unwritten rules, such as:

Moving boxes. Among all the moving supplies that are available, moving boxes are a must have, and you need to get as many as possible, in order to pack all the things you have. We rent plastic moving boxes that make moving way easier then with the standard cardboard moving box. Check out our packages and pricing here!

Other moving supplies. Except moving boxes, there are many more supplies that you need to take in consideration, such as bubble rolls, moving blankets, packing tape, glass and dish packs, and many other supplies.

Packing glassware. The biggest challenge is know how to pack glassware without breaking them. You can use bubble wrap, or even cotton clothing. Another tip is to pack them vertically. In this way there are lower chances to break.

Organize. As mentioned before, it is essential to know how to organize all your things. Therefore, it is recommended to make a list. In this way you will make sure that you didn’t forget anything.

Pack ahead. If you want to make sure that you will not forget anything, and especially if you want to save more time, then you should seriously think about packing ahead. Therefore you will save more time, and you will be able to think about everything else that needs to be done.

Labeling. After you have packed the moving boxes, it is essential to label them. In this way you will know for sure where your things are, and you will also know which are the boxes containing the glassware, or the ones containing the essential stuff.

Improvise. Besides boxes, you may also use baskets, laundry bins, and suitcases. Make sure that you use anything that you can, trying to be eco-friendly.

Moving can be exciting, especially if you don’t have to worry about the procedure, and therefore you can make some plans and enjoy the new life. Even if it may seem scary at the beginning, you certainly are curious about anything that will await you in the new place, wondering about the neighbors, and the city, if you want to move away from your old town. Once you have a moving strategy, all you need to acquire are a few moving supplies, and of course, the famous eco-friendly plastic moving box, PiggyBoxes!

Digging Deep Into the Center of Orange County CA- Irvine
    By: Mylene Dela Cena

Hello y’all! Did you miss our posts here?

Well, it’s quite a shame that we haven’t got enough time to share interesting articles on our blog but it does not mean we are shying out from the “limelight”. Piggy Boxes just become too busy with the business and guess what? Just recently, we got featured in OC Business Journal on a full page spread! Whoop! Whoop! And with that we got our blogging mojo back hence the very first post for 2014!

Piggy Boxes has been roaming around the entire Orange County doing business and in a snap, we decided that it will be great if we could let our readers in and get to know our country. So, with no further ado, we will take you with us as we dig deep into the center of Orange County California—the City of Irvine.

Unlike the Irvine region, the City of Irvine has only less than fifty years of rich history. But as promised, let us dig deep some more.

    History

12,000 years ago, they gathered evidence that people started living in the Irvine area. Land claims passed through Spain, Mexico and finally to the United States. The land that would be the City of Irvine was divided among the three large ranches which is the country’s main source of livelihood. It then became the property of Bixby, Flint, and the Irvine families. But in 1878, James Irvine bought out his partners’ shares becoming the Irvine family as the sole owner. As time passed, the Irvine family named several areas/places in the city right after their surnames. The city’s economy grew and the rest as they say is history.

Fast forward to the 20th century

The City of Irvine has a lot to offer to their residents as well as to their guests. Boredom is very far from anyone’s imagination when you stepped in to the City of Irvine. There are many ways you could enjoy your stay here. From local shopping, to nature tripping like hiking, whale and bird watching, sports like golf to diverse dining experience. We’ve listed few of the most sought after places and activities here:

Bommer Canyon- a place where you can go biking or walking and enjoy the sunset. This is somewhat popular among couples who are in for a romantic bonding.

The Flame Broiler- it offers healthy dinner options and you can stop by anytime your stomach craves for delish meals.

Irvine Barclay Theatre- if you are in for theatrical shows, then this is the place to enjoy arts and culture.

    Irvine Specials

The City of Irvine takes pride of their Newport Beach in Southern California as this is the place where over 1,100 giant blue whales are seen every year. Local residents and guests can enjoy whale watching cruises many times every day simply contact the Newport Landing Whale Watching.

Visit our blog often as we aim to bring you more informative posts about the rest of the Orange County—the place where we live in and do business with.

  • Go Green, Go for Natural Home Cleaners

Go Green, Go for Natural Home Cleaners
    By: Mylene Dela Cena

Many people these days would love to adhere to every green living campaigns. However, some of them think twice whether to pursue that advocacy the minute they see the prices of the so called eco-friendly products. You see, there are some items that are eco-friendly but not pocket friendly at all. But as we also believe that living green does not need to be expensive, we have here a list of natural home cleaners that you probably did not think exist for cleaning your homes. All you have to do is look around your kitchen!

    White Vinegar
If you think that white vinegar is for cooking alone then you will be surprised. Do you know that vinegar has mild acidic nature which is in fact a perfect solution to break down dirt and grime? But not only that, it can also kills bacteria, mold, and germs. Yes, commercial solutions may look very much effective but that is because of the added toxic. Vinegar is the perfect green alternative because its pungent odor disappears, dries fast, and serves as home cleaners without the toxic ingredients. You can use white vinegar to your:

Laundry- instead of using commercial fabric softener which can be harmful to people with sensitive skin, you can use vinegar! As you are on the rinse cycle, place half or one cup of vinegar into your laundry. The solution will help lessen the lint and ease out excessive harsh chemicals from the detergent you used.

Kitchen- you can clean your kitchen surfaces by making a solution of one-part vinegar to one-part water (1:1). But keep in mind that since vinegar has acidic nature, you might want to test it first on grout, tile, and marble. You can also skip using dishwater detergent and use half cup of vinegar and pour it at the bottom of your dishwasher.

Bathroom- toilet cleansers are usually harsh and have strong smell no matter how effective they are in making your bathroom clean. Vinegar can also work wonders to this part of your home. Pour three cups of vinegar and any rings on your toilet bowl will be gone in minutes as well as soap scum and hard-water stains. It can also make your bowl fresh by pouring at least three cups of vinegar to the back tank once a week.

    Lemon
You probably have seen many cleaning solution with lemon ingredients found on their labels. For years, lemon is known to have a superior cleaning powers that go beyond its fresh scent. Just like vinegar, lemon has also an acidic property that can gets rid off grease and grime much better than cleansers found in the market. You can use lemon to your:

Living Room- the best and natural way to clean and polish your furniture is by using a solution of one-part lemon juice to two-parts olive oil. Finish it off with soft and dry cloth.

Kitchen- dump your harmful dishwasher cleanser and switch to natural one. Use half lemon and a sprinkle of baking soda to scrub dishes. Lemon peel can also still be useful by dropping it off to your garbage disposal. It will help get rid off the nasty odors.

    Baking Soda
This is not just your ordinary white powder for your kitchen needs. It can also serve as abrasive cleaner and topnotch odor killer.

So how are you after reading the first three natural home cleaners we sited? Probably all giddy and up to clean your home, right? Now with these handy and all natural home cleaning solutions, you will have no reason to think twice on giving the "living green" advocacy the chance to influence your life and others too.
