    The Rise of Eco-friendly Cars
    By: Mylene Dela Cena

One top contributor of carbon footprint is cars and other vehicles. You can just imagine how many car owners are there in the world and all of them are considered the main culprit why Mother Earth is struggling now. And we are not just talking about personal cars here but also other vehicles that travel everyday for business or personal purposes like trucks and buses.

And as the idea finally dawned on all us, that carbon footprint caused by these man-made invention can slowly kill our environment, men invented a much better alternative- eco-friendly cars!

The use of a vehicle is indeed considered as one basic necessity of men. There could be a lot of trouble if people could not use this portal as means of transportation. Clearly, we can all feel helpless without cars. Thankfully, brilliant minds invented green vehicle or environment friendly cars.

Eco-friendly cars are just the same as what we normally use only that these cars produce less harmful impact to Mother Earth compared to the conventional internal combustion engine vehicles. You know, those cars that use gasoline or diesel. Eco-friendly cars can be powered by alternative fuels (which are less or not harmful at all) and advanced vehicle technologies. These newly invented green cars can run on electricity or a combination of electricity and hydrogen-based fuel. These two methods are proven to be cheap and would surely reduce the amount of the driver's carbon footprints. As time goes by, inventors and manufacturers of these hybrid cars are continuously enhancing and developing their masterpiece to provide even more emphasis on reducing if not totally eliminating pollution and waste.

One leading provider of information about new and used car information had released their top five best green cars of 2013. And they are as follow:

    1. 2013 Nissan Leaf

    2. 2013 Tesla Model S

    3. 2013 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid

    4. 2013 Volkswagen Jetta Hybrid

    5. 2013 Toyota Avalon Hybrid

    The Future of Eco-friendly Cars

Many have provided long projections about the rise of eco-friendly cars. In the next ten to 20 years, it is said that they will gain considerable market share over the conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles. As people accept this trend, it could also lead to massive reduction of petroleum use and energy independence will emerge.

Go Green, Go for Natural Home Cleaners
    By: Mylene Dela Cena

Many people these days would love to adhere to every green living campaigns. However, some of them think twice whether to pursue that advocacy the minute they see the prices of the so called eco-friendly products. You see, there are some items that are eco-friendly but not pocket friendly at all. But as we also believe that living green does not need to be expensive, we have here a list of natural home cleaners that you probably did not think exist for cleaning your homes. All you have to do is look around your kitchen!

    White Vinegar
If you think that white vinegar is for cooking alone then you will be surprised. Do you know that vinegar has mild acidic nature which is in fact a perfect solution to break down dirt and grime? But not only that, it can also kills bacteria, mold, and germs. Yes, commercial solutions may look very much effective but that is because of the added toxic. Vinegar is the perfect green alternative because its pungent odor disappears, dries fast, and serves as home cleaners without the toxic ingredients. You can use white vinegar to your:

Laundry- instead of using commercial fabric softener which can be harmful to people with sensitive skin, you can use vinegar! As you are on the rinse cycle, place half or one cup of vinegar into your laundry. The solution will help lessen the lint and ease out excessive harsh chemicals from the detergent you used.

Kitchen- you can clean your kitchen surfaces by making a solution of one-part vinegar to one-part water (1:1). But keep in mind that since vinegar has acidic nature, you might want to test it first on grout, tile, and marble. You can also skip using dishwater detergent and use half cup of vinegar and pour it at the bottom of your dishwasher.

Bathroom- toilet cleansers are usually harsh and have strong smell no matter how effective they are in making your bathroom clean. Vinegar can also work wonders to this part of your home. Pour three cups of vinegar and any rings on your toilet bowl will be gone in minutes as well as soap scum and hard-water stains. It can also make your bowl fresh by pouring at least three cups of vinegar to the back tank once a week.

You probably have seen many cleaning solution with lemon ingredients found on their labels. For years, lemon is known to have a superior cleaning powers that go beyond its fresh scent. Just like vinegar, lemon has also an acidic property that can gets rid off grease and grime much better than cleansers found in the market. You can use lemon to your:

Living Room- the best and natural way to clean and polish your furniture is by using a solution of one-part lemon juice to two-parts olive oil. Finish it off with soft and dry cloth.

Kitchen- dump your harmful dishwasher cleanser and switch to natural one. Use half lemon and a sprinkle of baking soda to scrub dishes. Lemon peel can also still be useful by dropping it off to your garbage disposal. It will help get rid off the nasty odors.

    Baking Soda
This is not just your ordinary white powder for your kitchen needs. It can also serve as abrasive cleaner and topnotch odor killer.

So how are you after reading the first three natural home cleaners we sited? Probably all giddy and up to clean your home, right? Now with these handy and all natural home cleaning solutions, you will have no reason to think twice on giving the "living green" advocacy the chance to influence your life and others too.

  • Looking for something to do in Orange County?

Posted on June 5, 2013 by Todd

Over the next few days Orange County is going to be slammed by a large south swell. That means breaks like the Wedge in Newport Beach will have waves at least 15 feet high! If you've never been there it's an amazing sight as the waves break very close to shore giving you the ultimate viewing experience! The swell should last through Saturday so you have a few days to travel down there.

How to get there: from PCH turn onto Balboa Blvd (Jack in the Box on the corner), and drive all the way until that street ends. Park wherever you can find a spot, and walk towards the beach. You will hear the waves and see all the people.

A few tips if you are going to make your way down there:

    - Be prepared for crowds. They don't call it a circus for no reason. There will be hundreds of people there.
    - Take a camera.
    - Be prepared to walk. Parking is tight at the end of the Balboa Peninsula.
    - Go after 5:00pm for the best show. During the day no boards are allowed into the water so you will only see bodysurfers/swimmers. At 5:00pm anyone can ride so you will see tons of surfers and bodyboarders in the water.
    - PAY ATTENTION! If a big set comes, either back up or prepare to get wet.
    - Have fun and enjoy the show!

Here are a few pictures of what the Wedge looks like:

  • Environment Friendly Products to Love

Posted on May 19, 2013 by Todd

    By: Mylene Dela Cena

Mother Nature is indeed lucky to have people of today’s generation. Long before eco-friendly living is a trend, mankind do not care a bit of how their actions are affecting our environment. As a result, the Earth almost fight for its life against the people who are benefiting from it. But that was before. Thank goodness for the early realization that the place we live in is the main reason why we all exist.

Now, wherever you look at, eco-friendly products or items that promise no harmful effects on the environment are being offered in the market. This is indeed a big change and definitely give us no reason why we should not opt for these kinds of eco-friendly goodies.

In this article, we have gathered few environment friendly products that you would surely love to have inside your home.

    Fibered Towels
According to some surveys, there are approximately 90 billion of paper products consumed by the Americans in a year. Thankfully, cotton fibered cloth are invented and are made available worldwide. These products are best recommended as they are eco-friendly, would absorb more, and are re-useable rather than reaching out paper towels.

    Re-usable Bags
This is in fact a fast trending fashion nowadays. Gone are the days when consumers would have more plastic bags than stuff they bought from stores. Now, retailers offered their customers chic and eco-friendly re-useable bags that they could flaunt every time they go for a shopping free. As of today, statistic shows that the use of harmful plastic bags are reduced to almost half of it and is continuously decreasing.

    Eco-friendly Appliances
They are not just pleasing to the eyes but also to the environment and to our pockets! Manufacturers finally came to their senses and made appliances that are not just savvy but are also energy saver. So in case you are on the lookout for new appliances for your home, look for energy saver logos and save yourself from eye-widening electricity bills.

    Hybrid Cars
Considered as one of the largest contributor of carbon footprints are cars and other transportation vehicles. Luckily, hybrid cars were invented. With these kind of cars, travelers are given two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars can amazingly work using electric batteries, solar energy or hydrogen, and other eco-friendly kind of fuel.

With these kind of eco-friendly products, there is practically no reason why people would still patronize items that do not just hurt the environment but are also harmful to our health. So remember, the next time you are out for a nice and eco-friendly shopping trip, consider the above products to complete your list.

  • Making the Big Switch: From Harmful to Eco-friendly Products for Your Home

Posted on May 18, 2013 by Todd

    By: Mylene Dela Cena

Did you join any kind of spring cleaning campaign this year? This might be a bit late but then nothing can be too late or too early when it comes to cleaning your home, right? Aside from the traditional thorough cleaning of your home, spring is also the perfect time to start your “live a green lifestyle” goals. It may sound overwhelming but the truth is, this is just plain and simple.

In keeping your goal of living a green lifestyle, the best place to start is at your home. If you would only try to look around and check out what you have been using all these times that could be a threat to our health and the environment, then you are in the right starting point.

Listed below are products inside your home that could be switched to eco-friendly ones:

Fabric refreshers- aerosol products are popularly made of chemicals that are both harmful to our health and the environment. Why risk you and your family with this kind of damaging items when you can use eco-friendly ones? Here’s what you could do on your carpets, rugs or upholstery when you do another spring cleaning: Get a baking soda and sprinkle it on them. Leave for about ten minutes. After that time frame, vacuum the powder and you could have fresh smelling upholstery. Wondering why use a baking soda? It is because this product is a natural odor neutralizer. With this you can rest assured that no allergic reactions could happen to any members of the family and won’t even hurt our environment.

Dryer Sheets- most people use these all for the love of good scents and huggable cotton fabrics after washing. But what good could it bring when we you know that every time you use these sheets and throw them after each consumption, it only adds up to our landfill? Solution: Use dryers balls instead. These product are re-usable and have the same purpose like dryer sheets but in a most eco-friendly way.

Incandescent Light Bulbs- this should be a no-no inside your home if you want to at least lessen your carbon footprint. There are more eco-friendly light bulbs in the market today that would not just save the Earth but would also cut an amount on your electric bill. Switch to CFL or LED lights now.

Disposable Food Services- not because you wanted to do things fast and easy, you would think that it is best to go for disposable food services. Yes, it would save you time from doing the dishes but think about how will occupy the landfills. And worst, think about how long will it exist. Living a green lifestyle means going back to the basics as well. Use your ceramic plates and stainless cutlery. For all you know, doing the dishes could give you some time to relax and refresh your memory.

There are a lot of ways that you could do if you really aim for a greener lifestyle. If you do not know where and how to start, be resourceful. Looking around you would see that you are in the perfect spot to start your goal and that is—inside your home.

    Energy Conservation Tips
    By: Mylene Dela Cena

In this era, people have become more aware in protecting our natural resources. Finally, most of us realized that reducing energy usage is the perfect way to promote and enhance overall sustainability. It does not matter whether you do small or big acts to practice energy conservation. The point here is at least we all know the benefits it can bring not just for ourselves and Mother Nature but more for the next generation to follow.

Whether at home, at work or any place you go to, you can practice energy conservation. Below are few tips on how you could start with this advocacy:

The best place to start energy conservation is none other than at home. Just by looking around you could see which appliances are deemed “energy suckers”. Starting off with our heaters and coolers. Based on some surveys, the average American household uses 43% more or less of the total energy costs to heat and cool the home. Now, here is what you can do to lessen that percentage:
Use a thermostat that can be programmed to automatically reduce the temperature at night (when the temperature is normally cooler).
Make sure that windows and doors are sealed to secure the heated or cooled air inside a room.
Maintenance of air ducts and furnace must be done on a regular basis.
Use insulation to your walls and ceilings.

Water heaters are deemed important especially with the kind of weather we have. But, just like our home heaters and coolers, it sucks up about 12% of energy costs. To conserve energy, you could lower the settings of your water heater. You could also cut down your shower time. If you are doing laundry using hot or warm water, forget it and use cold water instead. It may sound simple but just imagine the amount of energy you can save.

    Simplest Energy Conservation Tips:

Make use of your dishwasher when you have a full load.
It goes the same for your washing machine.
Use CFL or LED lights instead of incandescent bulbs.
Rechargeable batteries are more sustainable than disposable ones.
Unplug appliances when not in use. Even if you switch them off, the fact that it is still plugged, it can still suck up energy from the outlet.
Turn off lights when not in use.
Avoid using disposable food services. Go for the real ones like porcelain, ceramics, or biodegradable and reusable plastics.

Be one of the growing number of people who think of the future and not just of what we have today.
